September 4, 2016 16th Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion

"The Long Path"
Jesus preaches his harshest words to us this morning about hating our mothers and fathers and picking up our crosses in order to follow him — all of which are impossible tasks. And that may be the point. It is too difficult to follow Christ as he suggests — but something about what he says compels us to keep talking about him. I think it's his voice — it was so mesmerizing that even though his words are harsh, we want to try to fulfill them; and when we fail, we still find a way to carry his cross and proclaim his message of love and salvation.
