The Old Town Cemetery
In 2008, Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, entered into an exploratory agreement with the Town of Tarboro concerning the Old Town Cemetery, which adjoins the church on two sides. Since its founding in 1874, HMPC has been located adjacent to the cemetery and the gravestones and contours of the site are very much a part of the church’s landscape.
The Old Town Cemetery dates to 1790 and ranks among the more significant colonial cemetery sites in North Carolina.
HMPC is currently (as of November 2009) working with Little and Little landscape architects, Coastal Carolina Research, Sorie Landscaping, and the Town of Tarboro to determine the feasibility of the church’s stewardship and care of the site and the future relationship between the church, the cemetery, and the town itself.
