Boy Scouts

For more than 108 years, Howard Memorial has had the privilege of sponsoring scouting. One of the first, if not the first, recorded troops in eastern North Carolina was Troop 1 at Howard Memorial, founded in 1915. In the intervening years, there was Troop 19 and then in 1945, a new charter was obtained for the current Troop 49 which has operated continually to this day. To date, 140 scouts from Troop 49 have earned the highest Boy Scout rank, Eagle Scout.

Pack 49 meets the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month, from 3:00 - 4:30pm. For Kindergarten – 5th grade.
Troop 49 meets every Wednesday from 7:00 - 8:00pm. For 6th grade – 12th grade.

Some highlights of being part of our scouting programs are:

  • Each year, Pack 49 provides non-perishable food items to Tarboro Community Outreach through their “Scouting for Food” drive.

  • Camping trips to promote self-reliance, teamwork and fun. The Pack camps once in the Fall and once in the Spring. The Troop camps monthly and has a week-long camp each summer.

  • The Pack holds a yearly Pinewood Derby race.

  • Both groups participate in Scout Sunday at the church.

  • Both groups participate in the Tarboro Christmas parade.
